Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of blue-light blocking ophthalmic lenses on legibility and fatigue during near work with a smartpad.
Methods: Twenty-two subjects, who had a binocular vision of 0.8 or greater and no ocular disease, were asked to use a smartpad for 10 minutes after overlaying two kinds of blue-light blocking lenses (BRC and BB lens) and a plano lens on a trial lens frame. Before and after reading, non-invasive tear break up time(NIBUT) and their fatigue were respectively measured, and the clinical effect of blue-light blocking lenses were analyzed by estimating reading speed and recovery time of tear film after reading.
Results: Under the dark light, relatively lower NIBUT was shown in the case of blue-light blocking lenses compared to it with a plano lens during a display work with a smartpad. As a result of recovery time of tear film after reading, the rate showed a tendency to be faster in the order of the BB > plano > BRC lens under the bright condition however, the rate was shown to be faster in the order of the BRC > plano > BB lens under the dark condition. In the subjective symptoms questionnaire, general symptoms showed a tendency to be higher with wearing the blue-light blocking lenses than plano lens however, ocular symptoms were lower under bright illumination when using a BRC lens.
Conclusions: From the results of this study, blue-light blocking lenses show the effect on the recovery rate of tear film and the reduction of subjective ocular symptoms after a display work; however, the degree varies depending on the illumination conditions. Therefore, it is suggested to select an appropriate blue-light blocking lens according to the working conditions in order to reduce the eye fatigue during the display work.
